County Clerk

The Clerk and Recorder is an elected position in Colorado, and the Clerk has many important duties. The Clerk is the chief election official and maintains voter registration records. They also act as an agent for titling motor vehicles and issuing licenses.

The Clerk assists with the Board of Douglas County Commissioners, collects taxes and fees for motor vehicles, and issues marriage licenses and certificates. As recorder, they also manage all property records.

The Douglas County Court is part of the 18th Judicial Court District. County and district courts are combined into a single location. Municipal courts for Parker, Castle Rock, and Larkspur are also included, but those are strictly for town ordinances and have no other jurisdiction. The district and county courts are located within the Douglas County Courthouse. There are 22 districts in Colorado.

District Court

Civil Court

Civil cases are those that are not criminal in nature and usually involve a financial or property dispute between two people.

County court judges hear cases that involve up to $15,000. Small Claims Court involves cases up to $7,500. District court judges can hear civil cases of any monetary amount.

Veterans Court

Veterans Court is one example of a problem-solving court. This program is designed to help veterans with substance abuse and/or mental health conditions. Under court supervision, veterans are offered tools, treatment, and assistance to succeed.

Drug Court

Drug Court is a specialized program for offenders who have issues with substance abuse. This program offers long-term treatment, along with assistance with education, jobs, and housing, rather than a jail sentence. Random drug and alcohol testing are used, and the program is designed to be less adversarial than the traditional judicial process.

Criminal Court

Criminal court judges hear cases involving criminal offenses. County court judges hear cases involving traffic violations and misdemeanors, while district court judges handle felony cases.

Family Court

Family court judges hear cases involving divorce, custody, and separation. Juvenile Court is part of Family Court, as well. For example, paternity tests, adoptions, child support, dependency, and delinquency cases are heard here.

Probate Court

District court judges hear probate cases. Probate Court includes the administration and execution of estates, guardianship and conservatorship, and mental health cases.

Magistrates

Colorado allows magistrate judges to hear some cases, particularly in County Court. Colorado requires that a magistrate be a practicing lawyer with at least 5 years experience and must be licensed in the state.

Administration

In Colorado, most county-level courts fall under the administration of the Clerk of Court. The Douglas County District Court is managed by the Court Executive and the District Court Chief Judge.
